The 89th "Middle West" Division
The "Fighting 89th" Division was also known as the Middle West Division since it
was made up primarily of soldiers from the States of Missouri and Kansas. The 89th Division embarked
for France in June 1918, and returned to America in June, 1919. Although it was manned mostly be
drafted soldiers, it was considered to be one of the hardest fighting units in the war. The 89th Division
sustained 7,047 total casualties (1,516 killed, 5,513 wounded, and 18 missing and presumed dead).
